Three Donuts + One Day = Ugh.

Note to self: Eating three donuts in one day is not only going to make you feel like mental and physical crapola for the rest of the day, but it is also doing you no favors in the whole TTC journey. Remember, the idea is to create a healthy, strong body that is looks and feels like a happy home for a baby. Not a ride on the Tunnel O'Sugar through Wonka Land.

Here's what happened though. Student brought in three boxes of donuts and said, "hey, can you guys get rid of these? I brought them in for a class and someone else did too so we have extra." I'm a nice person, so I said "Sure! We'll take em off your hands!" and I ate one.

Then I started to feel kinda down on myself for having no control. But, what the hell, I already ate one donut. What's two? So I ate another one.

Then later my stomach started growling, because (newsflash), donuts aren't great at keeping you feeling full for a long time. And I didn't have any other food. So I ate a third one.

Fast forward two hours. Enter me wanting to die because I have spinny head and a stomach ache, much like after overindulging on booze.

You'd think, as a runner, that I would be a little more discriminating on what I put in my body. Especially given that I just spent the last three months on a strict gluten-free diet, with quite limited refined sugar. AND especially because I felt way better on that diet than I do now, all gluten-y and sugar-tastic.

Ugh. I need to get back to that. Or at the very least not gorge myself on three donuts and feel all gross and overloaded and a little wobbly from my body not knowing what the heck to do with so much junk.

Well you heard it here first: I'm going to take the lead from the ladies of blogs like Cease and Decyst and In Due Time and get down to business with eating for fertility! Step one is figuring out exactly what that means for me.

What diets / fertile foods have you tried? Was there anything in particular that worked?

  1. I have been vegetarian since childhood and am now eating gluten free as well (playing with gf since last August, serious about it since February). I recently decided to cut out coffee (after giving it up for Lent and feeling a lot better without it!). I just got a book about liver detox without fasting and might be trying that in the summer when I have more time to cook three meals a day! I am still in the IF trenches so I haven't seen anything "work" yet, but I feel much better physically:)

Good luck with finding out what works for you! Taking out gluten was HUGE for me in regards to stomach pain (I have endometriosis).

    1. How long did it take for the gluten free diet to make you feel better? About 6 weeks after being gluten free is when I had my worst blood work since my original diagnosis, but I've been feeling like maybe I've actually ovulated recently, maybe. Kinda. Perhaps. Maybe not.

    2. I noticed an almost immediate end to stomach pain/digestive distress. Also, my stomach went back to being flat instead of being bloated, like, all the time. I think my endo is playing a huge role (I had the blood test for Celiac about 2 years ago and it came back negative) in my sensitivity to gluten. I haven't had any blood work done since January, so I am not sure how it will be affected in the future. How do you think taking out gluten affected your blood results?

    3. I should also let you know that I have a huge weakness for salty snacks (potato chips, popcorn, salsa and tortilla chips) so I totally get the three donuts thing...we all have our vices and it doesn't hurt to indulge sometimes:)

    4. It's so hard to tell why my blood work was so crappy - maybe it had something to do with the gluten, maybe it just happened to be a shitty cycle. I can see why it's tough to learn anything about POF when there are SO MANY FACTORS that change month to month!

  2. Holy donut, Batman! Thanks for the shout out! :) I firmly believe after this diet I went through that you can do anything you set your mind to. It also helps if you don't have any major trips planned while you're getting used to what you can and cannot eat, especially if you really want to be strict. For me, I think that dairy, caffeine, and alcohol were the biggest system irritants for me.

    1. I've cut out caffeine, but dairy? Cheese is half the reason I get out of bed in the morning. And alcohol? Oh dear. I always want it so much more when I try to cut it out. You have a will of steel! And I'm jealous. :)

  3. I feel your pain, a guy at work brought in leftover jellybeans and I couldn't resist. I should have just sat down with a bag of sugar, ugh cause I felt like crap yesterday. Some days I swear I will never learn!

  4. I wish I had the willpower to go on some sort of diet that would surely make my body feel and work better. But junk food tastes so good! :P

    1. Isn't it a cruel world? Why can't brussel sprouts taste like ice cream and green beans taste like cookies?

  7. you have to give into your cravings now and then. Everything is okay in moderation - unless you are allergic... LOL...

  9. I found your blog via another blog and wanted to say "hi." Hi! *waves*

You are doing SO much better than I am on the healthy diet. I just can't seem to reign in my sweet tooth. I ate a chocolate chip muffin for breakfast this morning. *sigh*

I read your timeline and you've really been on a hormonal roller coaster. I don't know if you've considered it, if it's been suggested to you and/or you believe in it, but I'd recommend looking into Traditional Chinese Medicine. I've heard of great success stories with TCM and POF. I highly recommend the book The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis if you'd like to read more about it.

    1. Hi back! :)

Thanks for the recommendation of the Infertility Cure - I read it cover to cover shortly after I was diagnosed and went to acupuncture several times until my insurance decided to stop covering the acupuncture (I'm fighting with them now) and the herbs I got gave me crazy diarrhea. :( I'm hoping to get back into TCM after my marathon in a few weeks. Hopefully my insurance will give in by then to cover the acupuncture!
